Where do you look for incoming links?

Hey, I’m just curious to see how you all plan your “link building strategies” if at all you follow anything similar?

I was talking to a bunch of SEO guys the other day and many had different opinions. Some like directories while some thought it’s a waste of time. Many of them prefer buying text links undercover! Ahha! So I thought I better ask the readers, because you know the pros always has their tricks, while it would be interesting to know from the real people – like you.

So please let me know how would you go hunting for links..and where would you go?

For the longest time I spent a decent amount of my time submitting to link directories. It didn’t take long to realize it wasn’t a good time investment.

These days I I rely more on natural linking, where I don’t go out and look for links. However, if you run small “niche” sites as I do, natural linking is very little.

With these white-hat niche sites I do submit to directories. However my main source of links and traffic is through article marketing for these sites.

My “IM” related sites/blog rely solely on natural traffic and do well without having to worry about obtaining links.

    Hi Mani,

I don’t know whether submitting to directories does actually help because I haven’t done so far. I believe in natural linking. But do you know these days spam blogs link to each and every post and these links are actually taken into count by Technorati.

Do you get such spam trackbacks?

    Hehe nice idea :D

anyways, i can’t comment much coz i don’t have much incoming links, but i strongly feel that a good and different content is necessary to get incoming links. If you can give something different that is not a modified version of data anywhere in blogosphere, then slowly but surely ppl wud starting to link you. But, as i said content should be interesting!!!
This is my feeling, i cud be wrong.

Josh, I completely agree to what you said..small niche sites requires some push while content rich constantly updated ones requires contextual links more than anything else..

@Nitin, Yea I get lot of them but I don’t approve any. You can easily make them out from the rest isn’t it? :)

@Rajan, no you are right. Unique content can get you links automatically but it’s a pain while waiting for it, and in those times a bit of directory listing can help. Wouldn’t it?

    Hi,
Buying text links on the sly goes against Google policies, and will have the reverse SEO effect :D

I think the best way is the natural way – make good content, and the links will automatically come to you.

Naturally, blog directory listings help you a bit, but if its not an “elite” directory – i.e. one in which every entry is not human administrated, well, thats quite next to a link farm…

Guest blogging, and sites like Bligter (bligter.com) are good ideas.

Well! I am not an expert, but I have tried directory submissions, article marketing and writing good content!
Natural links are very hard to get by ( they are the best, I am told).

I get bored reading the same blog and move on and un-fortunately online friendships are not made this way! So don’t have any natural links!

As a newbie to blogging and seo, right now I just put my basket on backlinks by commenting on other blogs, submitting to blog directories, but can’t afford for buying links.

I run a niche blog (alternative weddings) and I rely soley on natural links from other bloggers and discussion forums. Signature links in various discussion forums make up the bulk of my links, so it’s imperative I make a good impression on Discussion boards.

I tried link directories for another website and they DID get me indexed on google REALLY fast, but I don’t know how useful they actually were in the end.

I started my blog recently. I have already started submitting to blog directories. Also made list of 200 article directories with high PR, but my goal is to have 300 article directories in hand to start submitting my article to get some quality backlinks.

Digg, stumbleupon and social book marking site certainly does help in bringing traffic, if post holds great value and appeals readers. Just today I also started my weekly giveaway, which I hope would attract some visitors and also in process may spread good news around:D
