Google takes us back to 2001, with it’s nostalgic search engine here. Interestingly, there was no SEO then.

And there are “SEO Experts” around who have more than 12 years of experience!

  1. Mani, there was SEO back then and people of that A group like BurceClay, Danny, DaveN, Greg Boser etc were present but back then it was just about spamming the engines. Which we all know about.

But none to be seen on Google, yea?

  3. I have been personally doing SEO since 1999. SEO includes creating links and add content, so thats SEO back in the late 1990′s in California for me.

  4. You are right: There was no SEO

And you are wrong: There was “Search+Engine+Optimization”

    http://www.google.com/search2001/search?q=“Search+Engine+Optimization”

Mostly it was META tag manipulation and directory submission. Even myself, wrote an article on how to submit to directories, in 2002.

  5. They were out there, it was the term itself that had not gone mainstream as Sree shows with his search term. I found many under similar terms such as: search engine rankings, search engine tools, ect..

I’ve been online from the mid 90′s and it feels like the term SEO has been around forever. I can’t remember it not being a part of web life.

  6. Dude seo the short form wasnt there.. but search engine optimization was always there…

  7. Looking at http://web.archive.org/web/20011201015622/www.bruceclay.com/web_rank.htm makes me feel there was traces of SEO.. but not in an ethical way though.
