10 Twitter tools to effectively manage your followers

Share

Managing your followers and friends on Twitter is not easy. But its a fact that your success ratio and influence power is directly proportional to how active your followers are. I’ve realized that rather than who follows you or how many people follow you, its important to know whom you are following and how active they are.

Some of the factors that will determine your influence power on Twitter are
- How active your followers are.

- Do they ReTweet your tweets.

- Whether they are regularly updated and have a good following.

- Are those whom you follow, following you back etc.

With the default options on Twitter, its not really easy to manage your followers, but here are some interesting web based applications that I found to be of great help. Hope you find them useful too.

1. Mass Unfollow those who are not following you back with Huitter

I believe that there is no use in following people who aren’t reciprocating on Twitter. I use this tool weekly, to check for people who aren’t following me back. It automatically unfollows everyone who aren’t following you back. Huitter. mass-unfollow-tool-huitter

2. Automatically unfollow all inactive accounts you are following with MyCleener

This is yet another tool that will help us automatically unfollow all the inactive accounts based on when their last tweet was, and help you save your follow number. MyCleener

automatically-clean-inactive-accounts

3. Find out common users following and being followed by two accounts

This is a great tool, because if you knew two power user accounts, say from your niche, then you can find out who are the guys they keep in contact with and who are the guys they are following and followed by with this tool. Running this tool with maximum five accounts will more or less reveal the “hidden” circle among them. Very effective if you know whom to stalk. Who follows whom who-follows-who

4. Manage your friends and followers with tags

This tool lets you rate and tag your friends and filter them on a timeline! You can also create custom groups of your followers and filter you timeline by that group. Very effective, but a little complicated to use. Twittangle twittangle1

5. Unfollow people who have not updated within “X” amount of days

This is one of the best ones out there. It lets you find out the tweeps out of your followers who have not updated within a specified number of days (you can decide how many days is it) and lets you unfollow them. Extremely helpful when it comes to keeping your followers group healthy. Untweeps unfollow-inactive-users

6. Find out which Tweet made you popular and which one un-popular

One of the things that’s frustrating about Twitter is the un availability of a tracking mechanism. I personally would like to know what was that one tweet that got me popular and which is the one tweet after which people unfollowed me. Very effective in finding out what people expect from you and what they don’t. This tool helps you find just that. Tweet Rank (it’s German, you may want to translate it to English.) tweet-rank

7. Find out your ReTweet Rank

ReTweets I believe are a good measure to find out how popular your tweets are. This site picks up all the re-tweeted stories and grades you based on the number of re-tweets. Though its not sure what the algorithm is, its a nice tool to find out where you stand. Retweetrank retweet-rank

8. Find out who’s following who on Twitter

Well basically this tool helps you to find out if those people you are following are following you back or not. Shows you the number of friends, fans and followers. But I use it for a different purpose. If I find out a power user in my niche who is popular and is often re-tweeted, I would like to find whom he is following and what are his sources. Simply use this tool, give in the username and it will show who all are following him, his friends and fans. The good thing is that you can sort them by the number of followers they have. So if you want to steal a power users “precious friends”, this tool comes in pretty handy. ;) Friendorfollow friendorfollow

9. Find out common followers between accounts

If you’re unsure whether to follow someone or not, just use this tool to find out if you have common interests and whether there are guys you are following in common. TwtrFrnd twitterfriend1

10. Find relevant and interesting Twitter users to follow

As I said earlier, a good twitter life is all about following and keeping in company with the most active and interesting Tweeps. And Mr.Tweet is one damn tool that lets you connect with them. I mean, its a very simple concept executed in an awesome way. It shows interesting profiles and stats such as they are active or not, responds to tweets or not and whether they’ll follow you back. Mr.Tweet

mrtweet Most of these tools require username and password, so use them wisely. Hope you like them.

UPDATE

Thanks to Mark, who introduced this tool called Tweepular to me. I wish I had known them before making this list. It is “the” best tool I’ve found so far. It has almost all the features I can think of for managing followers. Do check it out and you’ll quit using all others.

This is a great list, but I don’t like huitter. SUmmarily dropping all those feeds that don’t follow you is a bad idea. Should be called quitter.

  3. A great list of Twitter tools. These tools are essential during the explosion of twitter. As you rightly said one should take care about user name and password.

  4. You forgot a good Firefox extension, not exactly an application but a definite plus in managing your tweeps and followers:

    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/9591

Downside: it slows loading twitter a bit, but worth it with all the added features like built in search from your twitter home…

  5. Nice set of tools. Tweeted this post. Thanx.

  6. Hi Mani,

This is very useful information. I’ve been wanting to do some clean up work on my twitter account but found it to be tedious. Now that you have shared some wonderful tools with us it should make my work simpler.

    Cheers,
    Eddie Gear

I like the post but hey – a lot of people don’t want to make unecessary noise so keep quiet and follow. If you have 12000 followers do you want / expect them to all keep tweeting the whole time? I reckon a lot of these are really useful, but the unfollow ones a touch harsh. You could be losing a followers now who could be valuable later.

  8. Great information. I didn’t know there was so much to be automated. Thanks!

  9. Simon Patrick

Fantastic list, thank you so much!

  10. That was fun, although I couldn’t get #2 to work, it looks like some trouble on the site. I will try again in a bit. I gave you some tweetluv for your effort putting these new tools together. Mr. Tweet is the only one I had heard of.

  11. I’d be careful with Huitter. There are a lot of people who are worth following that don’t follow back. But yes there’s a lot of dross out there.

  12. What a fabulous resource. Thank you for sharing the great finds. All of these are new to me.

  14. I am new to twitter and I am looking for ways to get more followers, I only have 3 right now and I really want more people to see what I have to say and what I am doing. Any ideas on how to get more people to come to my twitter page and follow me?

    • tennisroll

      tennisroll
hi, Evan. I am new to twitter. I’ve only got three followers as well maybe you will be my 4th.

    • 1) Use Mr Tweet, & follow recommendations. Lots of them will follow back.
      2) In Find People screen, put #MoreFollowers. You’ll see a long list of people who’ll be glad to follow back. Just pick the ones that interest you.
      3) Do likewise with #FollowFriday.
      4) Pick a Trending topic that interests you from the sidebar, click on it, and follow those whose comments you like.
      5) Tweet a lot, reply to other people’s tweets, RT good tweets, and other people will find YOU!

  15. Good list of managers. I would add twitterholic on there as well, can be great to find people.

Number 2 was giving me trouble as well, it says they are limited to profiles with 700 followers or less.

  16. i will be releasing a twitter app in under 1 week that could easily become your most favorite twitter tool. follow me to find out about its upcoming release.

  32. Marc Swift

You missed Tweepular.com It BLOWS Friendorfollow out of the water.

  33. Great list – we have 20 over at our site – some listed here and some not – thanks!

  34. jks4usc

Am very impressed with this list of tools, can’t wait to begin using some of the more interesting ones listed. I’m a little hesitant of huitter only because I follow a number of folks not so much for them to follow me but to follow their interesting or witty tweets. They often fit in the category of 5,000 followers but follow 40 themselves. On the other hand, many do return reply if you message them. Thanks and I will likely link this article on an upcoming tweet. Good stuff.

  35. Wonderful list..Thanks so much Mani……

  36. Scott

    Mani,
There are many people claiming to know about these tools, only you have the really good ones. There are a number of other ones – FlashTweet, and Twitter Karma deserve mention, but only work occasionally if you fave a large follower base.

What I want to mention is that “huiter” is only Free as they initially claim for the First 3X only. After that you get this message:

“Sorry, but this script usage is limited for three times. If you want to continue please use another script. If you want to request another service just comment this post”.

Following the “another script” link, you are told you can use an unknown script for an unknown monthly Fee, and prompted for your Twitter ID and your Email, with PayPal Visa Donate button that says “Subscribe”. I stopped there, as no information as to what I was about to do was provided. Not that I’m not willing to pay for huiter, just find the redirect suspiciuos. Here’s the link decide for yourself. http://www.undergroundtwittertools.com/

  37. Twitter can be a very valuable link building tool but not for links on twitter itself. Its a kind of second order effect, I think this would be just as effective as some of the other social bookmarking sites, article sites and press release sites. So it could help but I would not put all my eggs in that basket.. Cheers keep up the articles.

  38. Jacob

Another nice site that just launched—albeit more humorous—is TweetingTooHard.com (link). Allows users to submit, browse and vote for the most self-important and pretentious tweets.

  39. Best practice: make the embedded screenshots link to the *site*, not the screenshot itself.

  40. TweetLater will also do automatic following and unfollowing on Twitter.

  41. twituser

I checked out TwitterMass. Tweet Spinner is far superior. It’s free version has many of the same features as TM (TM charges $24/month for its basic version).

And Tweet Spinner’s pro version blows the competition out of the water.

For my Twitter management, I use Tweet Spinner and TweetLater. They cover all the bases for me.

  72. Anyone who’s only following me because I follow them back, or who would unfollow me because I don’t reciprocate, is following me for the WRONG reasons – and I wish them well in their decision to unfollow.

I wish there was a tool, though, that would catch those who unfollow the minute you DO follow them back…

  73. Hi Mani,

    http://www.theunfollowapp.com

    i hope it helps

  86. bikash

    nice collection….great!!!!!

  87. I don’t agree with the idea of following those who follow you. When it comes to reciprocation, it does not work. How could I read all the tweets of 3540 people that follow me when I check my homepage ?

This idea is a cheap one. I have my own 8 people that I follow, just that. Twitter is all about influence and power. I can’t imagine Ashton Kutcher with his 1+ million followers making reciprocation to them, that would be just useless. What makes him so powerful is that people are interested in his life simple facts and add him as a bookmark in their twitters :)

  88. I wrote a GreaseMonkey script (a FireFox extension) to help me understand the people I’m following or not (and if I should)

the “Follow Rank and Follows in Common for Twitter User Profiles” script http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/64286 working on a users profile page (like http://twitter.com/manikarthik) and calculates

    a) “Follows in Common” or how many of the people I’m following are also being followed by this person. kind of like “Friends in Common” on Facebook

    b) “Follow Rank” or how many of the people I’m following are also following this person.

You can also find out who the people responsible for those scores are.

This gives you some information about how important they are in your Twitter Social Network.

    enjoy

  89. Great tools, but i think the unfollow one is not necessary..u need them for your marketing, to see your products. keep up the good work
    Regards
    Demola
