Automatic Social Bookmarking Softwares – Do they work ?
| Tweet | Share |
Right from when the social media revolution began, and people started to realize the power of social media, started the hype about social bookmarking and social media optimization. Many people still think that social media is all about automated submission to xxxx number of social bookmarking sites. There was one time when SEO was all about directory submissions, and every SEO expert had this magic tool with him that would get him first page results overnight. Fortunately or unfortunately, it was only a short wave. Directory submissions no longer worked and people started to realize that the magic won’t work anymore.

Now, when social media happened, the magicians turned to social bookmarking. Insted of directory submissions, this time it was social bookmarking sites and they promised (still do) 2k social bookmarks for prices as low as $50. People plunged in, some lost it, some recovered.
Difference between Social Bookmarking and Automated Social Bookmarking
If you got to understand why these automated social bookmarking won’t work, you have to understand the difference between social bookmarking and the automatic social bookmarking process.

In the automatic social bookmarking process, there is no content, nothing social about it, and hence pure spam.
The core concept of social media is completely missed here.
- In social media, you have to package your content to match the expectations of your audience.
- You have to even find out who exactly is your audience.
- You have to think about improving yourself and forget the push marketing model.
Unless you have an eye for quality content, command over controlled promotion methods, and a taste of “crowd behaviour” you are getting it all wrong.
Essentially, social bookmarking is not supposed to go automated, technically it ends up as spam. Some websites and profiles may save themselves but success won’t reach those who doesn’t understand how crowd behaves and how to make them happy. Do it the hard way, with ample research and the best tools you could find, say no to automation. It sucks !

Hi Mani,
Thanks for presenting the concept behind automated social bookmarking. Its a new concept but I also think it won’t pay off because as far as the seo is concerned content is the king and without it nothing will happen.
Hi Mani,
Thanks for this – i think it clears up whether or not just featuring your own content will work too!
Hi Mani,
I think the key part of social bookmarking is the “social” bit. Humans are social animals and hence understand the things on the left of your diagram, we also understand the need to share, to interact and to provide our own insight about things.
It’s pretty obvious when any part of of social media, be it bookmarking or using social networks such as Twitter has been automated and the people reading it as well as the machines at Google are smart enough to spot it.
Good insight Mani,
Seems that most people start by looking for the quick & dirty solutions before they realize the potential problems that it can lead to.
Although, managing your social media repuation manually may take more time, it is worth it as you can give your personal brand the kind of TLC that will make it grow.
When others see how genuine your efforts are, you will start to see your stock rise!
Thanks mani for this useful article.
This is really interesting, didnt know there were automatic submissions.
Google is improve their search results all the time so we have to think in what SEO tactics will work in the future, and not use the tactics that work today and probably wont work in the future !, so the point is to make onlye white SEO.
Happy new year to all..
This is a really nice list..But I want to add one more dofollow social bookmarking site..

Enjoy bookmarking..
It is amazing how many people pay money for automated spammy link building services which hurt their site’s reputation and destroy PR…
Lots of people rely on automated ways to promote their websites ans such but I really think doing it the manual way is simply the best.
Yup. Automation gives you lot of numbers quick but there isn’t any quality in them that will help you.
