Would you credit your sources or hide them ?

The secret to creativity is knowing how to hide your sources

- Albert Einstein

I can’t possibly completely agree with this quote but I think there’s a lot of meaning to it, than I can see through, at least.

Let’s talk in bloggers perspective. I believe that we all take inspiration from all around, designing our sites, writing content etc, but how often do you credit the source ? Is it a good idea to let people know that you’re inspired from another person ? Does it make you insecure ?

People think differently, so it may not be right to make a guess here. Personally, I think it takes a lot of guts to let others know that you’re inspired , and you’d be comfortable doing it only if you believe in it. If you prefer to hide it, won’t it let you down ? Its difficult to find an answer. So, let me ask you readers…

Would you credit your sources while taking inspiration ?

Hotlinking is the process by which a website uses an image from another website, thereby using his bandwidth. Some see it as theft while some think it is a free world so it’s okay. I don’t think that Einstein’s quote works fine in the blogsphere in case we’ve been inspired by someone’s post/comment/design to start or own post.

Mentioning them add credibilty for me not the contrary.

Hey Mani, In my case (a medicine blog) I always link to the source since credibility is what I try to obtain. In addition, recently I had to start incluiding references in order to make my posts more similar to printed publications.
By the way, I use WP polls for polls, I highly recommend it.

I do credit my image and fact sources if I can find them…..but most of my blog posts are based on personal experiences :)

If it was an inspiration, I would usually link to the site and continue with the discussion.

The quote looks interesting, I asked Binny VA about this (he is really read and knows lots of quotes, you might remember from the beat-up)

He said: Its not a wise advice – its a humorous quote. Something like ‘Creativity is great – but plagiarism is faster” or “Stealing from one is plagiarism – but stealing from many is research”.

Also have a look at this: http://idek.net/H5q . This also looks like a satisfactory explanation :)

    From the above link :
“He’s saying that a great person isn’t someone who has no sources – who derives everything himself – he’s one who makes the sources unimportant”
    :)
