9 Reasons why I prefer to DM you rather than reply in public on Twitter

Okay, the cliche first. I love Twitter. And one of the reasons is because its the perfect, non cluttered communication model I’ve used ever on any social media channels.

One glitch though. I think the @reply model of conversation sometimes doesn’t makes sense…wait..before jumping into conclusions, I said “sometimes”..note that please !

@Replies are great, its a transparent communication model. But I have a problem with this, guess its just me. To respond to each and every reply that come my way could make my timeline look very awkward !

I mean, there are replies that come to me saying things like “There’s a pixel jutting out on the site header panel” and even things like “Can we do business together”. And honestly, I would like to see both the questions with the same importance and don’t want to neglect either one. But replying to each and every reply could mean I’m spamming my timeline.

One thing I often repeat is – “The reason why I prefer to DM you for your replies is that I respect you just as much as every other person following me. The last thing you want to see is thank you’s and lols in my timeline.”

Just wanted to clarify that I love the DM concept on Twitter most, its God given. And I can think of more than nine reasons to substantiate my point, however here are the first nine.

1. The last thing you want to see on my timeline is lot of “Thank you” and “lol” messages
2. I can only DM people who follow me, so its like a check on who’s following me
3. I respect you as much as I respect other people following me
4. I don’t want to bore others with meaningless messages
5. I can get more personal on DM’s than replies
6. DM’s is like super efficient email
7. You can ping me with links/details you don’t want to let others know
8. I don’t know what to make of this, but the best friends on Twitter DM me most
9. I think I’ll be more open and friendly on DM’s than in public

Now, I’m not trying to say that its wrong to reply in public or anything, so long as your followers are okay with it, you can do whatever you want, that’s what I prefer to believe. But if anything pisses them off, you better stop it.

Summary

Replies in public should work for all, its just that I’m not comfy talking too much to one person in public, when I can talk to him one on one in DM. Like if this was a huge party, you wouldn’t just talk to one person right, you reach up to those you want to have word with. DM is like may way of doing it. Hope it makes sense.

    Hey Mani…
I agree with you for not talking ‘publicly’ all the time but here’s something that makes Twitter DMs a heap of crap for me…
Most of my DMs comprise of automated DMs from those whom i follow. They come from humans but they are still ‘automated’(and that’s why i hate them)
Now, just after i saw this post of yours, i looked at my DMs and i have no regrets why i didn’t see them for more than a month…(huge crap…except the recent ‘two’ which were ‘human’ :) )
So, until Twitter does something abt it(ban auto DMs), i wud still avoid luking a DMs…
    (btw, i still can’t DM u)

Agree, auto DMs are sick ! They are so lame that I can no guess which is human and which is not, but everyone can I believe.

I take note of every RT and every new follower, and want to thank then so replying them publically would be doing things a little over the board, so I prefer DMs. DMs are no excuse for not communicating.

p.s – am also not interested in increasing replies just to increase your reputation/ ranks. sucks big time.

I really like the @reply but I came across the same problem about spamming my timeline. Which by the way, I hate when people do because you just see their name and their worthless tweets up and down the page, it’s almost aggravating.

I’m just finding out that the DM is working better for me as well, unless I want to copy in others… Took me a while to come to that conclusion… the more you tweet, the more you need to learn to use DMs

I agree with you about flooding the stream with uselss (to the rest of your followers) thank you’s. However there is one problem with using DM’s a BUNCH of folks never look in theirs because of all the spam (auto DM’s) that they get from new followers, especially the people who are actively building their followers. Maybe a way to blend your idea with that issue is to @them in publich…. @ChrissyMorin I’ve left you a DM ? except that actually takes up more space.. hmm? I guess I’m not sure what’s the best form..lol and thank you!

I can’t stand Auto-DM’s, but if they are people trying to start genuine conversations, then I’m cool with it…
