I’ve been trying all possible URL shortners for tweeting recently, and found that of all the reliable ones, Stumbleupon’s new URL shortner service Su.pr is very impressive.

I’ve been trying Bit.ly, Tr.im etc, and they are quite good actually. Bit.ly is a great service that’s very popular on Twitter, but I’ve found it a bit more clumsy when it comes to integrating completely with Twitter.

But.ly lets you shorten URLs automatically through Tweetdeck (also the web), where you just need to set the URL shortening service to bit.ly and the links are automatically shrunken.

But apart from just shrinking URLs I’m more interested in knowing the stats like how many clicks the link generated, and how many times it was re-tweeted. BIt.ly successfully provides all these info, if you tweet it using the JS bookmark console.

But if you take a look at SU.pr, it gives you more stats.

Su.pr gives you the following.

- Number of re-tweets

- Number of clicks to a URL

- Number of SU reviews

- Graphical representation of the traffic

- Suggested time for tweeting, based on success rate

- Promote another URL (may be your own site) along with the tweeted links

- Schedule your tweets for later

The only problem with Su.pr is that it shows the “in-browser SU toolbar”, while the link is being visited, unlike bit.ly which redirects you to the original website. Su.pr also shows the original tweeter with the statistics and the links to the promoted website on the right hand side.

The promoted website is a nice way to get some additional traffic to your own website, but some people may not like the whole toolbar concept itself, and may want to go the original website without any obstructions.

Essentially, I found Su.pr very productive, but if they can do something with the toolbar that will make it less obtrusive, I think this is the best URL shortner we’ll have.
