SEO Tips Day 5 – Don’t pick the keyword with highest search volume

Okay we’ve come to Day 5 today and today we’re going to talk a little bit about Keyword Research.

When it comes to Keyword Research, the whole idea is about picking up the best keywords that will give you the best results. Ideally, while selecting a keyword you should be able to search engine optimize it so that it gives you maximum traffic. For the same reason, every keyword research tool gives you clear idea about the search volume for every keyword.

Technically, when you pick the top searched keyword, you should be able to get all the traffic from it, assuming you do the SEO right.

But the problem here is that when you select the top searched keyword, unless its a fresh and newly found niche, someone would have already dugg it, and already have a website put up on it. Or they would already be authority websites targeting against those keywords.

To check this, you could go to Google and simply search for those keywords that the keyword research tool suggested. Find out how many page results it shows, and how many websites are already targeting it (from the page title inclusion).

If there are too many, it makes sense to skip those keywords and go for the next best one that fits you, and with lesser search volume. It would be easier to search engine optimize against that keyword and get top results on them than waste your time with heavily competitive ones.

What keywords tool do you use ?

  1. Thats it. I have got proof to show. I have adviced many not to take KW with high volume as they r difficult to optimise. Once you are going good with a low search volume KW and your brand or site is quite good known we can target some High Search Volume KWs. My words were went in vain. Now you will be of my support.

Padma, Its a very broad term and not to mention, very competitive as well. However if you build quality content (lot of it) I see a lot of scope for improvement. One good thing is that your niche relies a lot on “related links” and if you could work on them, possibly with a social media bait, it could give a good push. Unfortunately, there isnt a lot of scope on the content (recipes), so you might want to leverage on the other SEO factors on the page ruling out the real textual content.

  3. Hi Mani
Nice tip. Can you eleborate more on the keyword tools?

  4. Hi Mani,

I agree with you there, I almost always start out with the lesser keywords and work my way up…it’s just easier. And really, it seems that once you get established with the lesser keywords, it sort of makes it a little easier to grab the higher traffic keywords….a lot of the time, at least!

  5. What is the number of competitive pages we should be looking for? Less than 1k, 100k? Or is it all about the pages that appear in the top of SERP?

  6. i will use adwords keyword suggest tool.

  7. I use the Google Adwords keywords website. I use “key phases” because plain keywords are too saturated right now. Instead of “organic” or “soap” I use “lavender organic soap” or “organic baby soap”. Lets see if that will help!

  13. Yes, i agree with you…

    good informative one for beginners

  14. nice post.keyword is something like backbone of any internet business. Before making any website on a niche one must evaluate all the keywords related to that topic.

  15. That means there is a monopoly in keywords, if you took it in the beginning itself, and you made a website to route the traffic? so what will others do? What i’d seen so far is, most of the good keywords are taken by the people, to grab the traffic, but they may not be providing any right service or information, or sometimes they may not be the owners of the product too. What we can do to overcome such a barrier?
