Apple might launch its own social network for gaming

Looks like Apple is all set to launch its all new social networking site this month – Game Center. Although this is nothing like facebook, it will be focused on a good chunk of users, especially gamers and iPod Touch users. Its however on a completely different league, and nothing to be worried about for facebook or other social networking sites.

The basic features of Apple social network might include the ability to invite friends to play a game against you, have the servers automatically match you with other players, leaderboards, and badges. Even though the network takes cues from various other social networks, its going to be a focused niche with very concentrated mix of users. But as it comes from Apple, it will be interesting to see what comes up. For sure, a game changer.

Major Indian telecom company BSNL’s official website hacked !

In the latest in India – Pakistan cyber wars, a group claiming to be “Urdu Hackers” have hacked into the BSNL, Punjab official website, which is India Governments official Telecom services agency.

Its a state-owned telecommunication enterprise in India. BSNL is the third largest cellular service provider, with over 66.88 million customers as of June 2010 and the largest land line telephone provider in India.

The hackers who call themselves “Urdu hackers” claims to be from Pakistan (via Email). The private data from the website have been downloaded – claims the group.

The Punjab BSNL website shows a “Down for maintenance” status at the moment. The above video was emailed to me, which confirms the groups responsibility.

Twitter launches “Twitter Tales”

Twitter announced today that they’re launching Twitter Tales, and effort to highlight stories from users about how Twitter influenced them in their lives.

A great effort to clean up Twitters shadowy image of “spam” that has grown in mentions recently, Twitter tales will be a series of stories where regular Twitter individuals would tell their story to the whole world.

In the first episode, there are three stories.

Life: @natashabadhwar who’s a mother/filmmaker/photographer/writer from New Delhi who sees Twitter as a form of self therapy

- Community: @caltrain is a crowd-sourced Twitter account where people can help others avoid pitfalls on their daily commute
- Humor: @thebloggess provides a witty and honest behind the scenes look into her blog writing

Google Calendar now syncs with Outlook 2010

Google Calendar syncs with almost anything calendar, and that’s why we all use it. But Outlook 2010 was the odd one out there and Google today fixed it by releasing the sync version of Google Calendar with Outlook 2010.

Now, just download Google Outlook Sync 2010, install it and set your sync frequency with credentials, that’s all. Google help is available here for setting up Google sync with MS Outlook 2010.

Vijay Mallya’s website hacked by group claiming as “Pakistan Cyber Army”

This is the latest example of the India-Pakistan cyber war, that’s been going on lately. Dr. Vijay Mallya’s (Businessman, MP and owner of KingFisher Airlines) website had been hacked yesterday by someone claiming to be “The Pakistani Cyber Army”, who posted Pakistan’s flags and threatening messages on the website’s homepage .

"This is payback from Pak Cyber Army in return to the defacements of Pakistan sites!" said one of the messages.

However, the “hack” was momentary and Mr.Mallya on his facebook page have updated that he has managed to un-hack the site.

“We have un-hacked and restored my website but have gathered full evidence of the hacking.” – said his facebook status.

There have been many instances recently where both Indian and Pakistani groups have been reported hacking into either party websites. The authenticity of these groups however are doubtful.

Anybody can hack into a website and claim themselves as any group. Fact is that in India and Pakistan, Government authorities are less worried about security issues, and are not really concerned about taking appropriate measures to curb them, or that’s what we can learn from such stories. Unfortunate.

Android phones gets gesture search from Google

Another innovative app from Google is out for Android phones – Gesture Search !

It lets you search by writing out characters on the touchscreen of your Android device by doing a “double flip”, or flipping your phone away and then back. This eliminates the need to activate Gesture Search from a home screen shortcut. You can also turn the feature on or adjust its sensitivity from the Settings menu.

Meanwhile: YouTube banned in Russia!

The internet Gods are angry ! Or so it seems. While most of us were busy at work, authorities in Russia have decided to ban parts of the internet including YouTube. Most parts of Russia now are without access to YouTube and other sites that lets users upload videos / content.

The reason: because one odd user had uploaded a video deemed problematic on grounds of ultra-nationalism.

So, that’s probably got to do with politics and some clever chap uploading something “revealing”. What’s interesting is that this order is from an authoritative court in Russia and there is no appeal against it officially.

And what has YouTube to say regarding this ?

YouTube is a responsible online platform. We have global community guidelines to what is and isn’t acceptable. On the site YouTube, our millions of users flag content they deem to be potentially breaching these terms. Flagged videos are reviewed 24×7. If deemed to violate the guidelines, videos are removed from the site.

I agree with YouTube, a single potentially inappropriate video should not lead to the blocking of a legitimate online service offering millions of legitimate, useful, commercial and entertaining videos.

Now edit pictures online right from Picasa web albums

Picasa marries Picnik. Though most of us are on Flickr, Picasa still remains the preferred image sharing tool for most of the Google lovers. And now, Picasa lets you edit pictures right from your web albums via Picnik – the popular online image editing tool.

There are no feature improvements, its more like an integration between Picasa and Picnik. There is a small Edit button on right top, that appears on single photo pages and clicking which will open a Picnik window right inside the browser.

Its probably not the best thing to have, as I’d expect the Picnik features to be integrated with Picasa rather than opening a new window inside it. However, this is fair enough.

Thanks Google, but we love Flickr !
